If you overstretch your Achilles tendon, it could tear or rupture. This painful condition makes it difficult or impossible to walk. Therefore, it’s vitally important that an accurate diagnosis is delivered in an effective, timely fashion.

Symptoms of a Torn Achilles tendon

  • A popping sound followed by intense pain
  • Pain or stiffness in your heel or calf, particularly in the morning or after physical activity
  • Intense pain the day after exercising
  • Inability to stand
  • Difficulty or inability to walk
  • Swelling that gets progressively worse during the day

If you’ve experienced any of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with one of our skilled orthopedists as soon as possible.

Treatment for a Torn or Ruptured Achilles Tendon

Repair of Achilles Tendon Ruptures

Surgical options involve stitching the torn tendon together and reinforcing it with other tendons if needed. Our surgeons are leading specialists in minimally invasive surgery, which means a quicker recovery, enabling you to get back to your daily activities as soon as safely possible.

We’ll be glad to discuss your treatment plan to see if this is the right option for you.

Achilles reconstruction

In more severe cases, surgery is needed to reconstruct the tendon.

While there are several different surgical methods, in general, your orthopedic surgeon uses sutures to hold together the torn ends of the tendon. This usually involves an incision on the back of the lower leg. In many cases, this can be performed as an outpatient procedure.

At EmergeOrtho, we guide our patients through the complete recovery process, combining advanced medical technology with the skills of our board-certified and board-eligible providers. We welcome the opportunity to serve you.
